A Brief Story of Soap:

The original Marseille soap was inspired by Aleppo soap from Syria, made with olive oil and laurel oil. Aleppo soap was brought to Spain and France by the Crusaders, gradually popularising soap in Europe. With the rise of the soap industry, Marseille, in southern France, became a hub for soap production due to its abundant olive oil. In the 17th century, King Louis XIV issued a royal decree establishing soap production standards, mandating that soap must contain 72% olive oil and be produced in Marseille. Thus, Marseille soap became the official soap of the French court, earning its status as a renowned traditional soap.

Traditional Marseille soap consists of 72% olive oil, 18% coconut oil, and 10% palm oil. Only soaps meeting these specifications were stamped with the royal seal indicating 72% olive oil. In the 19th century, as soap became more widely used, Marseille soap grew in popularity across Europe. The introduction of various oils from Africa and the Middle East further diversified soap varieties, leading to the wide range of soaps available today.
